About This Game Inspired by chess, but adding combat that YOU control, Archon was the original Battle Chess. The battles are easy to pickup, but pretty difficult to master, and the single player campaign adds some nice variety.I'll be playing this one every now and then for a while I think.. I used to play the hell out of this on the Commodore 64.. The challenges of the campaigns are badly designed. AI never attacks the player so completing some missions within allowed number of turns is not possible. So I learned there is a version of Archon Classic available. I have been playing this 25 years ago on the Commodore 64, and it’s available for Steam. A short purchase and test play later: this actually works. Slightly more modernised graphics, if you care (or true old style pixels, if you do not like that), and the dynamics of the gameplay have been preserved. New play modes have been added.Very worthwhile, even if you do not know the original.In Archon, you play an epic battle between light and dark.On the strategy board you move pieces like in chess, only that some fields are permanently light and dark, and others are changing affiliation with the phases of the moon. Light pieces are stronger on light fields, dark pieces on dark fields.If you strike a piece, the game switches to an arcade battle arena, in which the pieces fight each other in melee or ranged combat. Each side has unique pieces with unique, but balanced abilities.Additional complications are two spellcasters (one per side), no-magic zones and power points, which can heal pieces, but are also a second venue for winning. The gameplay is a nice combination of board game strategics and classic 80ies arcade battle.. Loved the original Archon on C64. Strategic tabletop positioning, distinct yet balanced factions with unique pieces, game-changing spell management and skill based combat duels. Archon was ahead of it's time and a precursor for many modern game mechanics. Archon Classic captures and enhances that. Good fun.. Game was great back on the NES, I'm glad someone finally remade it. They did a good job remakeing it at that, the modern graphics do the orginal credit, and there's an awesome campain mode to boot. Supports controllers and multiplayer.. Good game. Controller really recommended.. A nice update of the 80s original. A different take on chess.. For those of you who grew up playing the original Archon, you will be glad to know this one exists. It has everything the old game did, and offers a lot of improvements. The major thing being secondary attacks. Those were first introduced in Archon Ultra, and these are somewhat similar. There is also the ability to play on different maps some are dependant upon the number of players. ( You can have 4! :D) There is the classic Archon map, maps that allow your guys to level up to level 3, and maps that have runes that provide benefits when you move onto them. For those of you who feel the base game was fine the way it was however, and don't want all these additions. You are in luck as you have the ability to turn off the secondary abilities so it will play like the base game. In fact they even brought in the old school original Archon graphics for units, as well as updated graphics. The only drawback is the multiplayer is same computer only. No network\/internet. Which hurts it IMO.
